The contributors to this volume discuss issues related to polling
in relation to democracy and the globalizing world. The case
studies cover a variety of public opinion issues in 12 countries:
Argentina, the Balkans, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia,
New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United
States. The chapters in the first part use international polls
and focus on people's views on democracy, agreements, and disagreements
between the public in the U.S. and the European Union, European
integration, difference in cultural and political viewpoints
between the public in the U.S. and Latin America, and the potential
EU accession of the Western Balkans. The chapters in the second
part treat issues related to public opinion polling in national
elections, the use of exit polls, methodological problems of
election polling, and the role of polls in an election campaign.
