    Rodney E. Hero (2007). Racial Diversity and Social Capital. Equality and Community in America. New York, NY: Cambridge University Press, 200 pp., ISBN 978–0–521–69861–0.
 
In his study of social and political phenomena in America, Rodney Hero combines two theoretical perspectives, the racial diversity and the social capital thesis. The racial diversity thesis focuses on inequality, on the unique experiences of a minority population. The social capital thesis emphasizes the sense of ‘community’ in social and political orientations. Hero assesses the accuracy, the adequacy and the appropriateness of these two theoretical perspectives to comprehend American politics. He reviews and summarizes both theories, and he also explores their explanatory power. These analyzes are based on state-level data and on national opinion data. Hero shows that racial diversity continues to shape American politics and that—to his own regret—social capital has few beneficial consequences for relative racial equality.
