For this issue thanks are due to Kenichi Ikeda (University of Tokyo) for help in compiling the reviews.
Al-Jarrah, Abdallah, and Cullingford, Cedric (2007). The concept of democracy: Muslim views. Politics, 27, 1623.
This article uses a survey of students at a university in Jordan, generally considered one of the more moderate Arab Muslim states, to explore their understanding of the terms democracy and terrorism, and the associations that they raise. Al-Jarrah and Cullingford found, surprisingly, that the students most frequently associated democracy with King Abdullah, Jordan's constitutional but still powerful (and unelected) monarch. The next most frequent associations were with freedom or liberty but also with colonisation
